| WILL PANEL WALK THE TALK | | JU takes lead against sexual harassments cases at campus | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 8: Even as University of Jammu has constituted Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH) to keep a check on the growing incidents of indecent advancements and implement Supreme Court guidelines over the issue the question, however, remains on whether this committee brings the complaints received, if any, to the logical conclusion and that inquiry is initiated against those who were charged with similar allegations earlier.
It will be a challenge of sorts for the committee to deal with allegations of sexual harassment which has rocked the University on several occasions in the recent past.
Last year much hyped case of alleged sexual exploitation of a girl student by Prof Susheel Sharma, Reader of Punjabi in Directorate of Distance Education of Jammu University led to a series of protests by students and scholars.
Although CASH was constituted just a couple of days ago, the students and scholars have started to raise doubts over the sincerity of the committee as they have objections over the inclusion of some of the members in it
“We have no faith in the committee as the most of the members included in it are dummy, just to shield the offenders. If this committee wants to prove its credibility then first of all it should initiate inquiry against Prof Susheel who has gone scot-free after being involved in a sexual harassment of a girl.” said Vikas Sharma, President National Secular Forum
“What is the fun of including a representative from Kashmir University and what do the authorities want to prove by nominating two members representing NGOs from the Jammu University teaching departments. Administration in no way is honest with its intentions.” he added
However, when contacted the Registrar of the University, Dr PS Pathania told Early Times, “There was some confusion among a section of scholars over their non-representation in CASH but when they met Vice Chancellor, the matter was resolved. Due representation has been given to the scholars and students in the said committee as one of their elected representative has been included in it.”
He further said, “Any complaint in writing made before the committee will be fairly investigated.”
It is worthwhile to mention here that the CASH, which has been formed on the lines of premier institution like Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi, comprised 16 members from faculty, non-teaching wing (gazetted as well as non-gazetted employees) students and scholars.
Prof Neelam Saraf, Head of the Department (HoD) Hindi, has been nominated convener of the committee while other members include Prof Deepak Raj Gupta from Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Management Jammu University, two members representing student community viz Rameshwari Salathia and Ankita Gupta Culture Secretaries of Jammu University, Kusum Sharma and Shobha Khajuria, Wardens of Vivekananda Boys Hostel and Priyadarshini Girls Hostel respectively, Babita Thakur Vice President Jammu University Research Scholars’ Executive Association (JURSEA) and two representatives from Non Government Organizations (NGOs) Dr Renu Nanda and Dr Arti Bakshi. Apart from these members, Prof Nilofar Khan, Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) Kashmir University is also a part of the CASH team.
