Dogri Recognition Day celebrated
Literature and culture are great source of history: Governor

JAMMU, JANUARY 9 - The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, felicitated four prominent personalities for their exceptional contributions to the promotion of Dogri language and literature at a function held in connection with the Dogri Recognition Day, at Abhinav Theatre, here this evening.

Those felicitated at the function organized by the Dogri Sanstha, Jammu include Mr. Balraj Puri, for being awarded with Indira Gandhi National Integration Award; Prof. Nilambar Dev Sharma, a renowned scholar and Dogri writer and Mr. Yash Sharma, a veteran Dogri poet, for their significant contribution to Dogri language and literature and Mr. Balwant Thakur, for his contribution to Dogri theatre. The Governor presented a shawl, citation and memento to each of them.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor observed that literature and culture, besides providing a sound foundation for the society, also serve as a vital source of history.

Referring to the Dogri language, the Governor said that it is a simple, expressive and straightforward language, which is being continuously enriched with the addition of new books and literary creations. He appreciated the Dogri Sanstha for its efforts towards the promotion of the language.

The Governor congratulated all those felicitated on the occasion and lauded their contributions in enriching the Dogri language and literature. He referring to the play “Ghumanyee” directed by Mr. Balwant Thakur, portraying the scarcity of water in the Kandi areas in yester years, added that such plays deserved to be translated into other languages and staged in various parts of the country.

The President Dogri Sanstha, Jammu, Prof. Lalit Magotra, in his welcome address, threw light on the history and contribution of the Dogri Sanstha in promotion of the Dogri language and literature and its future plan of action. He also spoke about the rich contribution of Mr. Balraj Puri, Prof. Nilambar Dev Sharma, Mr. Yash Sharma and Mr. Balwant Thakur in the varied fields.

A musical programme, based on Dogri folk songs, was also presented on the occasion.

The General Secretary, Dogri Sanstha, Prof. Veena Gupta, presented Vote of Thanks.

A number of writers, academicians, intellectuals, prominent citizens and people were present on the occasion.
