J&K Bank wins Christmas Gold Cup Football

JAMMU, January 09: The Jammu and Kashmir Bank took the avenge of last year’s defeat after the formidable side turned the tables against J&K Police beating latter by a solitary goal in the final of 4th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament played at Mini Stadium, Parade, here today.

Went ahead in the first half, J&K Bank maintained the lead in rest of the game so as to ensure their much needed victory. The loss of two big titles to the Police in the past haunted the Bank most and the side was desperate to turn it around this time.

“We cannot afford loss in every final, so this time the boys made a firm resolve to play like true professionals only to win the title,” Assistant Coach of J&K Bank, Manzoor Ahmed Dar said
The only goal of the match was scored by Nigerian, Badru K K Ibrahim, who netted the ball in the 26th minute after a dilly dallying battle on the goal mouth. For his outstanding performance throughout the event, Badru was adjudged `player of the tournament’ by the organizers—All J&K Christian Welfare Association.

The attractive part of the final was big crowd, which turned-up to witness the two top teams of the state playing for the title, enjoyed every moment of the charged game. But, this time, the jam-packed crowd behaved like a true lover of the game.

Equally good, Police too got a couple of chances but could not convert them into goals. “Yes, we missed two sure goal chances. However, the first lead by Bank was the turning point. The lead not only mounted pressure on the boys but served as motivational factor among the opponent, who afterwards played a guarded game,” coach of the J&K Police, Ranjit Singh said.

Since the game was crucial for both the sides, the referees had a tough time to control the boys, who on a number of occasions engaged in rough play. To control the boys, centre referee, Rajeev Dev shown yellow card to Asif of Police twice which automatically became red forcing the forward to stay out of the game. J&K Bank too faced the official’s wrath and as many as three yellow cards were shown to Zubair Ahmed, Khalid and Aman Thapa.

To encourage sports and sportspersons, chief guest, Governor, N N Vohra witnessed the full 45-minute first half play. He had to leave the venue due to certain engagements.

Later, Minister for Revenue, Raman Bhalla gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides other individual prizes.

Earlier, soon after the final was over, chairman of the organizing committee, S M Gill welcomed the distinguished gathering and gave a brief note of the event. Prominent among others present were Advisor to Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul, former Member Parliament, Janak Raj Gupta, Vice President of J&K Bank Ltd and host of other distinguished guests.

Meanwhile, on getting the news of team’s win, member Sports Board of J&K Bank, Mohd Amin Khan complimented the boys for title win after a long gap.
