Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 09:
Angred by the suspicious death of a youth at Super Bazar here late Friday night, people placed his body on the Gujjar Nagar bridge this afternoon and blocked it to vehicular traffic.
Mohammad Arif (32), a resident of Gujjar Nagar, had last night fallen unconscious on the stairs of a shop near Libas Ghar at Super Bazar while talking to his friends.
He died on way to the Government Medical College Hospital, according to police sources.
Sources alleged that Arif, who worked as a salesman in the garments' shop of a city BJP leader near City Chowk, was a drug addict.
Sources said his friends, who had called him to Super Bazar at night, also worked as salesmen in different shops at Buta Ram market. They had been rounded up for questioning, the sources added, saying most of them were drug addicts too.
Post-mortem was conducted on Arif's body this morning. Sources said no external injury mark was found on him. It would be unfair to comment on the cause of death as any
authentic statement in this regard could be made only after the post-mortem report was available, the sources added. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to his family
members for last rites. The family took the body home at Gujjar Nagar. When it was
being taken for burial at the Gujjar Nagar graveyard, people placed it on the bridge and held a demonstration, demanding an indepth probe into the matter.
However, following an assurance from senior police officers, who visited the spot, people lifted the body and took it to the nearby graveyard where it was buried.
The bridge remained blocked for few minutes. During this time, no vehicle plied on it. The traffic was, however, through when the protesters left for graveyard.
A case in this connection stands registered at the City Police Station.
Police, investigating the case, said no case had yet been registered against the rounded up youth. "If we smell something fishy behind Arif's death, they will be booked in
the case. They can also be booked if it is found that they had given drugs to Arif at Super Bazar. In that case, it is possible that his death may have occured due to overdose," the
police added.
