| Second intrusion bid foiled in week | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 09: Just two days after the bloody terror attack at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, heavily armed militants, taking cover of fire by the Pak-Rangers and thick fog, came close to the International Border (IB) in Akhnoor sector early Saturday and opened heavy volume of fire in a bid to infiltrate into the Indian territory. This was the first ceasefire violation in the region this year and the third infiltration attempt. The first intrusion bid was foiled by BSF in Ramgarh sub-sector of Samba on January 4. It was followed by another unsuccessful infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote area of Poonch district Friday. Official sources said the Rangers, in yet another ceasefire violation, fired on the forward Sidharwal Post at Pargwal in Akhnoor at about 4 am to facilitate Pak-based militants to cross over to this side. Sources said taking cover of the Pak fire, a group of militants came close to the fencing along the IB and opened fire while making attempts to enter this side of the border. The BSF troops retaliated, foiling their attempts. The exchange of fire between the two sides continued for about 30 minutes in foggy conditions after which the militants fled back to the Pak territory under the cover of dense fog, the sources added. There was, however, no casualty on either side.Sources said the fencing wire was later found damaged and cut at certain points, hinting that the militants had made attempts to enter the Indian territory. Security was enhanced on the Jammu-Akhnoor road after this incident.
