| HM commander among two ultras killed in Reasi | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 10: Two top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a deputy divisional commander of the outfit, were today killed by security forces in a fierce gunbattle at Thanol, 70 km from Reasi towards Mahore. A special police officer (SPO) and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of army also sustained injuries in the exchange of fire. Police sources said finding it hard to sustain in the snow-covered mountains, two top HM militants came to remote Thanol village in the morning. While they were searching for a hideout, security forces came to know about their movement, the sources added. Soon thereafter, troops of 54 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and police rushed to Thanol. Sources said when the militants saw the troops approaching them, they hid themselves in the village mosque. Troops then laid a cordon around the mosque and made repeated announcements asking them to surrender. They, however, resorted to intermittent firing. Troops did not fire even a single round on the mosque, exercising restraint. Sources said after over three hours of cordon, the militants came out holding two mosque inmates and using them as human shields. In an attempt to flee, they hurled two grenades on the troops which, however, missed the target and exploded in noman's land. Sources said while trying to flee when they discovered that they had been surrounded from all sides, they took shelter in a nearby dhok. Troops cordoned off the dhok and shot them dead after an hour-long exchange of fire. The two civilians taken hostage by them were also rescued, the sources added. A SPO and a JCO were also injured in the encounter. They were identified as SPO Ram Kumar and Subedar Jai Kumar. As a helicopter could not land in the area due to hilly terrain and bad weather conditions to airlift them, they were evacuated in an army ambulance to a military hospital in Rajouri. The slain HM deputy divisional commander was identified as Ibrar alias Abu Obeda of Thanol. The identity of the other was yet to be established. Two AK rifles with magazines and several rounds, a communication set and explosives were recovered from them. Sources said Ibrar was involved in the killing of a BSF jawan at Kandi Gala in Reasi in November last year.
