| ‘WG V’ members share table to reject Justice Sagheer’s report | | Jaitley: Report weakens Indian sovereignty over Kashmir | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 10: In the backdrop of wide spread resentment and confusion over 5th Working Group recommendations on State-Centre relations suggesting greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir, all members of this group, except from Kashmir region, today unanimously rejected the report, describing it as “mischievous”, “manipulated” and “personal views” of Justice (retd) Sagheer Ahmed.
The members also targeted the ruling National Conference for “influencing” the recommendations, saying it has “hijacked” the Group which was constituted during the regime of PDP-Congress coalition in 2006.
The occasion was a seminar on “Views and Comments by the Members of Prime Minister’s 5th Working Group on State-Centre relations” organised by Jammu and Kashmir People’s Forum, principally an offshoot of erstwhile Shri Amarnath Yatra Sngahrsh Samiti (SAYSS), at Jammu Club here this evening.
The WG members took strong exception to the recommendations suggested by chairman, Justice Sagheer Ahmed and vowed to fight unitedly against the “propaganda document” (WG report), which, they alleged, aimed at hurting the sentiments of people of Jammu and Ladakh regions.
Sunil Sethi, president Bar Association Jammu (BAJ) presided over the caucus while Arun Jaitely, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, also made a detailed deliberation over the issue.
Harsh Dev Singh of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, Ashwani Kumar Churungoo of Panun Kashmir, Thupstan Chhewang, former Member of Parliament and patron Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF), Surinder Singh President, Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC), Ashwani Sharma, MLA and president Jammu State Morcha (JSM), Sheikh Abdul Rehman, state president Samajwadi Party (SP) among the members of Working Group who expressed their strong resentment over the recommendations suggested by Justice Sagheer.
“Sagheer’s report was a propaganda document put forth by the National Conference-Congress coalition government to divert the attention of people from basic issues. It is virtually impossible to implement the recommendations suggested by the chairman of Working Group,” Arun Jaitely remarked.
The BJP leader said, “I believe the root cause of Jammu and Kashmir imbroglio is Pakistan’s inability to accept that J&K is an integral part of India. Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of Pakistan. It seems that the Central Government is buckling under the International pressure and it is ready to make any compromise on J&K, which needs to be opposed strongly.”
Jaitely maintained that the report was a move to weaken India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir. “The Working Group, which was constituted by the Prime Minister during PDP-Congress coalition government, has seemingly been hijacked by the ruling National Conference to give practical shape to its Autonomy formula. The recent developments are slowly and surely steps for Azadi (Independence) slogans of separatists,” he said.
He also took a strong dig at the Justice Sagheer, saying he has violated all rules while making the recommendations. “In case he would have been a sitting judge, he was fit for impeachment,” said Jaitely.
In his address, Sunil Sethi warned the Central Government that the report would destroy centuries old bonds of brotherhood among the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “We warn the Union Government against any compromise on national sovereignty and integrity of the country. The repot can only be implemented on our dead bodies as it was an agenda of bigger sinister plan to weaken the sovereignty of the country,” he cautioned.
The BAJ president said that the report has been prepared to appease the separatists at the cost of national people of Jammu and Ladakh. “Unitedly we should put pressure on the Central Government to abolish the Article 370 for full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with Indian State,” he said.
While expressing strong resentment and anguish over the recommendations, members of group categorically rejected the report and disclosed that the report has ignored the interests of Jammu and Ladakh people. “It was informed the members that there would be two more meetings when the Working Group committee had met at Kashmir House in New Delhi on September 3, 2007. The members were not taken into confidence and even not a single copy of report has been circulated to us,” they said.
