| 12 deaths in 10 days dent normalcy claim | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 10: Ever since the director general of police (DGP) claimed return of normalcy, the militants have responded strongly and caused dents in the normalcy myth. The spurt in militant attacks has evoked sharp reaction from the people’s democratic party (PDP) president. She went to the extent of saying that some elements in the security agencies did not want restoration of peace.
On December 30, four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel got killed when unidentified militants struck near Sopore town in north Kashmir. One CRPF man sustained injuries. Sopore, has by and large remained peaceful for the past few years. Yesterday, a former militant was hot dead in the apple town. This was the second incident of its kind in during the past one month. On January 2 border security force (BSF) men sustained injuries in an attack at Soura. The militants opened fire on the police men causing injuries to the duo. On January 7, militants, believed to be fidayeen entered a hotel at Lal Chowk and engaged the police and the CRPF in a 22-hour battle. The attack left a police man and two civilians dead. The top police officials refused to term the incident a fidayeen attack. The Chief Minister soon joined the chorus. “The incident was not a fidayeen (suicide) attack. Fidayeen attack means a suicidal attack on a high value target. It was a simple encounter between running away militants and the security forces”, he said in a statement issued here yesterday. The PDP president perceived the attack as a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the troop withdrawal from the trouble torn state. She also said that some “elements insecurity agencies were not interested in restoration of peace.” While Mahbooba’s `far fetched’ analysis has not been taken seriously, the fact that irresponsible and reckless statements from politicians and senior police officers have always created trouble. Yesterday a fierce encounter was reported from Khrew area of Pulwama district. Last week an activist of Nationalist Congress Party escaped an attack on life at Kishtwar. Today a former militant was shot dead in Anantnag district. If this is DGP’s perception of normalcy, then the commoner has to be concerned about his safety.
