| Patil, Azad visit Teetwal | | Hand over passbooks of Rs 5 lakh each to orphan | |
Teetwal, October 08 Union Home Minister Mr. Shivraj Patil and Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad today visited Teetwal to see for themselves the pace on rehabilitation works launched in the area after the devastating earthquake which struck several areas on this day last year. Minister for Agriculture Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar, MLC Mr. Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Chief Secretary Mr. C. Phunsog, Director General of Police Mr. Gopal Sharma and senior civil and army officers were also accompanying them. The visiting dignitaries enquired about the relief and rehabilitation measures carried out in the area. They went round photo exhibition organized by the army, depicting rescue and rehabilitation measures initiated by it in the area after the earthquake. They inspected a tailoring centre where local women are imparted training in cutting and tailoring. They also visited a computer centre and library set up for the local youth. On this occasion, the Union Home Minister and Chief Minister presented pass books to the orphan children whose parents have died as a result of the earthquake. The amount of Rs 5 lakh each for the orphans who have lost both parents and Rs 2.50 lakh each for those who have lost single parent has been deposited in their bank accounts. The relief has been sanctioned under Prime Minister’s special package for the rehabilitation of the orphan who can withdraw the entire sum after turning major. Till that time, the interest accruing on this amount would be utilized for their education. They also visited the local school and presented gifts to the students. Union Home Minister Mr. Shivraj Patil speaking on the occasion said that the government is aware of the problems confronted by people after such a natural calamity. He said it is heartening that the state government and the army extended all possible help to the affected. He assured that the entire nation was with Jammu and Kashmir in its endeavour to help the affected people start a new life. Several works have already been initiated to minimize the problems of the people and assistance was being provided for construction of residential houses, schools and other public utility infrastructure. Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed gratitude to UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Mr. Shivraj Patil for their efforts and assistance in the rehabilitation of the earthquake affected people. He said the entire country rallied behind Jammu and Kashmir during the difficult time of earthquake and contributed relief including tents, blankets, eatables and other material for the affected. He said that Union Home Minister personally monitored the dispatching of relief material gathered from other states.
