Paharies students hold protests in Rajouri, Poonch for ST status
Block Jammu-Poonch Highway, threaten to intensify stir

Poonch, Jan 11- Responding to the strike call given by Pahari Speaking Students Union (PSSU), the sister organization of Jammu and Kashmir Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum, in support of their demand of ST status, thousands of students Monday thronged the streets of Mendher, Rajouri and Sunderbani and hold protest rallies. They also staged dharna at Sunderbani and blocked Jammu-Poonch Highway for about one hour.
Under the patronage of J&K Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum headed by former Minister Mushtaq Ahmed Bukhari, Pahari students held protest rally of about seven thousand students at Mendher which was led by Mehmood Iqbal Khan.
Holding banners, the students raised slogans in support of Scheduled Tribe status to Paharies and also threatened to launch statewide agitation in support of their demand. Speaking on the occasion, Mehmood Iqbal Khan said that ST status is the right of the Pahari community and it must be given to them. Rabia Mustafa, Farkhana Jabeen and Mumtaz Hussain Shah also urged government to respond to the demand of the Paharies at the earliest otherwise they will hold dharna in front of the assembly.
Similar protest was held at Degree College Rajouri where it was led by Tariq Khan and Syed Mughal Pahari leaders. Meanwhile students of Sunderbani staged dharna on Jammu-Poonch Highway and blocked vehicular traffic for about one hour. The protest was led by Shahish Bhushan District Youth President of Pahari Organization. Ram Kumar and Varinder Singh also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile addressing the students rally, Provincial President of Jammu & Kashmir Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum Mohammad Azam Sagar said that they are united to fight for getting the justice to community. He said that the demand is genuine and all governments in state and Centre have acknowledged it. He said that students are the force of the nation and they can adopt any path to get their rights.
