EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 12: There seems to be no respite for common man from chilly and icy conditions as the mercury continued to show downward trend in the state with Jammu recording a minimum of 2.2 degree Celsius, about four degree Celsius below normal.
The day temperature broke yesterday’s record of 9.0 degree Celsius and it further slipped to 8.5 degree Celsius, coldest ever since 1987. The city had recorded minimum temperature of 4.0 degree Celsius yesterday.
The Met officials, however, have doled out hopes of rains and sunny days in next couple of days, besides immediate respite from foggy conditions.
On Tuesday, Jammu shivered at 8.2 degree Celsius, nearly 11 degrees below normal in day’s temperature. The minimum temperature dipped significantly here, with Banihal, Jammu, Katra and Batote recording a low of -1.6 degree C, 2.2 degree C, 5.7 degree C and 4.8 degree C, respectively.
Speaking to the Early Times, Dr M K Khushu, Chief Scientist Agrometeology, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) informed, “Today, it was the coldest ever day in Jammu region since 1987 with day temperature plummeted to 8.5 degree Celsius. Yesterday, it was 9.0 degree Celsius which was also another coldest day during the past 23 years.”
He further informed that the minimum temperature of Jammu city recorded at 2.2 degree Celsius, four degree Celsius than normal. The Chief Scientist, however, said that the chances of any immediate rains are very bleak and the region would continue shivers under the cloud of dense fog and chilly waves for next couple of days.
As per the official records available with the SKUAST-J, earlier lowest ever temperature was recorded at 9.4 degree Celsius on January 15, 2003. From 1987 to 2003, the day temperature was recorded above 10 degree Celsius. In 2004, the coldest day had recorded the day temperature at 10.6 degree C while it 9.8 degree C in 2005. Even the coldest day in 2006, 2007 and 2008 had recorded at 11 degree C, 15.3 degree C and 13 degree C respectively.
Foggy conditions, however, also affected the rail and air services with few trains were running several hours behind their schedule.
Reports said that Himgiri Express, which was scheduled to arrive at Jammu Railway Station on January 11 at 12:30 p.m, reached at around 1:50 p.m here today, about 26 hours behind schedule.
Meanwhile, Cold wave conditions also worsened in Ladakh region with fall in mercury level, though there was some improvement in night temperatures in Kashmir valley.
The frontier region of Ladakh reeled under cold wave as night temperature dipped to minus 22.0 degree C in Leh as against minus 20.0 yesterday while Kargil's night temperature slipped to minus 16.4 deg C.
However, there was improvement in the night temperature in Kashmir valley with Srinagar recording minus 3.6 deg C, 1.6 degrees below normal.
