| Pak Army, Rangers directly supporting militant infiltration | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 13: Pakistani troops and the Rangers had in recent weeks started giving direct assistance to groups of militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. This view is shared by senior Army functionaries who have been watching the developments on the LOC in Poonch and Rajouri sectors and on the 187 km long International Border in Jammu sector during the last one month. What is surprising is the way Pakistani troops have opened fire on the Indian border guards in Poonch and in Akhnoor sector in a bid to carve out a passage for the infiltrators to sneak into the Jammu sector. The way Pakistani troops aided militants, who have been brought on the launching pads across Kanachak, Akhnoor, Samba, R.S. Pora, Poonch and Rajouri, in crossing into Jammu sector indicates that the agencies across the border are desperate in using the Loc and the IB in Jammu for pushing into the Indian territory several groups of militants. As many as five infiltration bids were made during the last 11 days in which two infiltrators were injured and one BSF jawan was killed. Official sources said that the Pakistani Rangers had assisted the infiltrators in snapping the border fence in Akhnoor sector. Not only this even Pakistani troops fired a couple of rockets which missed the target and there were no casualities. Sources said that Pakistan Government has fears that the Indian troops may take some advantage of thinning of deployment of security forces by Islamabad on the LOC after additional forces were needed to intnsify military operations against the terrorists in Waziristan the Pakistan border guards tried to kick up some border row in order to divert the attention of the Indian forces. Sources said that the Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, paid a day's visit to Jammu simply to get an on the spot assessment of the developments on the LOC and the IB. He had already received reports that the Pakistani troops may be getting ready for playing a bigger mischief by helping groups of militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, to sneak into the Indian territory for the purpose of giving teeth to violence in Jammu and Kashmir. According to these sources, Pakistani forces had started concentrating on the LOC and the IB in the Jammu sector for helping militants in crossing into the Indian state after the border routes in north and north-west of Kashmir had become impassable because of recent heavy snow. However, field reports said that border routes in Keran and Karnah sectors were still passable as the area had not witnessed any snow. Infact some companies of troops had been withdrawn from Keran and Karnah borders on the assumption that the border belt would be buried under snow which would block infiltration routs. It was learnt that companies of troops may be sent back to the area for checking infiltration of militants. Another reason for pushing militants, belonging to Lashkar-i-Toiba, into Jammu and Kashmir was to spare Pakistan of their menace when the troops were engaged in a fight against the Talibans and the Al Qaeda in Waziristan and the Swat valley besides on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border belt. Over the years Islamabad has learnt that once terrorists remain idle in their training camps they become restive forcing them to indulge in anti-social and anti-national activities,Hence by facilitating infiltration of large groups of Lashkar men into Jammu and Kashmir Islamabad could ensure a problem free period and provide moral and material support to the militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources said that after threadbare discussion on the situation on India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir a decision was taken to strengthen the border vigilance system by installing additional number of sensors and other gadgets so that the Indian troops could monitor the movement of militants in advance.Another decision is to strengthen the round the clock patrolling on the LOC and the IB.The Defence Minister was informed that tall Sarkanda grown across the border and thick fog were being used as a cover by the infiltrators to reach the zero line where they tried to snap the border fence for sneaking into the Indian territory. Sources said that anti-fog lights and devices were being installed at a number of places on the border.During recent meetings between the senior officers of the BSF and the Pakistani Rangers the Indian side laid emphasis on destroying the tall sarkanda. The senior functionaries of the Army in the Northern Command informed the Defence minister that the Indian troops were fully prepared to meet any challenge from across the border.
