| Amid ceasefire violation by Pak, ultras make three forced infiltration bids on IB | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 13: Hours after Defence Minister A K Antony called for extra caution on borders to defeat forces inimical to peace and stability in J&K, the Pak Rangers and the militants fired several bullets on the International Border (IB) in Kanhachak sector near here on three occasions since Tuesday night. While the militants, perched in the forward Pak posts, made unsuccessful forced infiltration bids thrice from 11.45 pm to 5.45 am, the Rangers as usual adopted the familiar pattern of providing them cover fire. Police sources said eight to 10 militants were spotted Tuesday at 11.45 pm by a BSF ambush party with the help of night vision devices while they were approaching the barbed-wire fencing near BSF's Tent outpost. Pre-empting their move to breach the fencing to infiltrate into the Indian territory, the BSF personnel opened fire, which the militants returned. The Rangers also resorted to firing to provide them cover, the sources added. On Monday last, militants had taken position near the fencing in Kanhachak and damaged a part of it by blowing it up in two improvised explosive device (IED) blasts. This time, however, the BSF troops stalled their forward march in the foggy night by opening fire on them. Sources said the intermittent firing between the two sides continued upto 12.20 am after which the militants retreated and hid themselves in the Pak 'protective bund'. At 3.30 am, the militants' movement was again seen in the same area. The troops again fired at them, forcing them to retreat. The militants were joined by the Rangers, the sources said and added that the firing between the two sides continued for about 20 minutes. The guns on both sides fell silent at about 3.50 am. The third and the last attempt to infiltrate into the Indian territory from the same area was made by the militants at about 5.45 am when the fog was very thick. This time, the militants made another infiltration bid by opening fire on the ambush party, the sources added. Sources said the ambush party retaliated, foiling the infiltration bid by them. After exchanging fire for few minuts, the militants fled back to Pakistan. Sources said a red alert had been sounded all along the IB following intelligence inputs that militants would make desperate infiltration bids in the days to come to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations here. Police too had been put on high alert in the borders. Sources said after firing began last night, SP (rural) Mohan Lal reached Kanhachak and stayed there whole night to personally supervise the operation.
