Foul investigation in Shopian case would expose Abdullah govt

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 14 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbboa Mufti today said the inability of the Jammu and Kashmir government to properly investigate the deaths of two young women in Shopian will not only 'define for all times the Omar Abdullah regime' but would further erode the faith of the people in institutions of the state at local and central levels.

''It now seems that whole charade of investigation by the multiple agencies, one after the other, was aimed at shielding the culprits rather than bringing them to book,'' she alleged.

Addressing a workers convention in Chrarisharief here, she said the state government was playing tricks on people repeatedly in the name of justice, development and employment.

The PDP leader said she hoped the High Court would pursue the report of the CBI as it was the last hope of the people and would ensure justice to the family of the victims and the people of the state.

''It now looks that all investigation was done to prove the initial verdict of Chief Minister that it was a case of drowning, to be true,'' she alleged adding that for any investigation it was necessary that the civil society feels satisfied with its standards of objectivity and professionalism.

''Justice has to be done to be seen, but the initial delay deliberately caused by the state government in registering the case and starting the investigation had led to destruction of vital evidence as had been concluded by the agencies of the government it self,'' the PDP leader said.

''There is pretty little that CBI could have found out so late in the day,'' she said and added that it was a cruel irony that cases had been registered against the family, the witnesses, lawyers and those who wanted justice.

This, she said, was previously unheard of in Kashmir.

Ms Mufti said in order to revive faith of the people in the system and remove the causes of frequent friction, it was necessary that rule of law was allowed to be established in the state.

''This was apparently not happening as long as the perpetrators of crimes go scot free or incidence of human rights violation continue to take place,'' she added.

The power situation has also become critical, which had been fixed to a great extent by the PDP earlier, during Congress coalition government.

Similarly, the non availability of ration from government depot’s has created a virtual famine in many areas of the state, she alleged.

She said on the one hand the government was claiming to have received huge funds from the Centre and on the other, the treasuries were unable to make payments.

Senior PDP leader Nabi Lone Hanjura and district president Saifudin Bhat also addressed the convention.
