| Minister discusses Draft Forest Policy | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, January 14 - The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Environment and Remote Sensing will conduct exhaustive studies on the environmental aspects of the twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, besides prominent tourist detonations of the state.
Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Mian Altaf Ahmed issued the directions to this effect, here today while reviewing the functioning of the Environment and Remote Sensing department.
The Draft Forest Policy -2010 also came up for discussion during the meeting.
Highlighting the importance of the department of environment and Remote Sensing in ensuring sustainable development in the state, Main Altaf directed the department to take up environmental studies of Jammu and Srinagar cities and tourist spots of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Patnitop and come up with necessary recommendations to develop these as planned and pollution free cities and tourist spots.
The Minister also asked the agencies to create environmental parks in districts of Rajouri and Poonch and other districts of the State during next financial year.
The Minister emphasized the need for strengthening the department and asked the authorities to come up with detailed proposal for the expansion of the department, indicating the staff and infrastructure requirements along with financial implications as per the priority. He assured that the Government would take every step for strengthening the department.
Referring to the Draft Forest Policy -2010 proposals conceived by the Government, the Minister said that the Policy document would be adopted only after taking the suggestions and comments of experts, other stakeholders and the Public at large. He said there was a need for evolving close coordination between various agencies to address the increasing ecology environmental concerns.
Earlier, Director Environment and Remote Sensing briefed the Minister about working of the department and highlighted the need for expansion of its mandate keeping in view the growing environmental concerns of the State.
Commissioner/Secretary Forests, Mr. Shantmanu, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Jagdish Kishwan, Director Soil Conservation of Forests, J&K, and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
