| Wean Youths of Drugs in Udhampur | | Police fail to check the menace in city | | Sarita Jamwal Udhampur JAN 14: Drug abuse is rising at an alarming rate among the youths in the Udhampur district as the government sponsored schemes of anti-drug abuse campaign and police fail to control menace and the number of drug addicts is increasing day by day.
Though the local Police has seized a large amount of Poppy Straw , Charas, Heroin but drugs worth several lakhs are still getting into the district daily from valley and Doda district but still illegal business is going here having patronage of police .
It is pertinent to mention that a large amount of drug particularly Charas and Poppy straw is being supplied here from valley and Doda district and number of times Army check post at Karla Nallah near Kud on Jammu Srinager Highway seized such contrabands through there routine checking and vigil on such elements .
. The flow of Poppy straw (Bukki) has been increasing at an alarming rate in the last two years which has definitely harm the social order of the district . Poppy Straw (Bukki) ,Charas, Gutkha , Solvents, inhalants and prescription drugs that contain addictive substances are increasingly becoming the drugs of choice among youth,here as these are easily available in market .Police is yet to evolve a comprehensive strategy for combating the growing drug menace in the district despite being informed number of times by citizens and Ngos during police public meets here .
Local residents alleged that police failed to control menace as popular drug presently being used by youths here (Bukki )poppy straw and Chars is easily available on tea stalls in Udhampur and no one is check to control it . It is quite amazing that police personals who have been assigned duty to control menace are himself in its grip and some of them are found using it on tea stalls with other drug addicts . As per the information from sources and addicts on the annoy,ity to not disclose there names Bukki and Chars is easily available in bus stand , Shiv nager Temple area and slain talab , Birma bridge areas from local tea stalls . Drug abuse, which had been spreading alarmingly, would become a serious social problem if it was tackled on a war footing.
