| Omar for strong cooperative culture in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JANUARY 14 – Pinpointing the importance of a sound cooperative culture for balanced growth and progress in all fields of life, the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah Thursday said that the concept of ‘one for all and all for one’ enshrined in cooperative movement holds good for all times to march ahead on the road to progress.
Addressing a function organized by Jammu and Kashmir Milk Producers Cooperative Limited (JKMPCL) here today, the Chief Minister called for reviving the cooperative movement in the state. “The cooperative sector received a set back during the 20 years of disturbance in the state and time is ripe enough now to work for its revival”, he asserted.
Mr. Omar said that Jammu and Kashmir has greater potential for production, processing and marketing of milk and milk products, as such, Cooperative and Animal Husbandry Departments should jointly workout a policy of exploiting this potential in a befitting and viable perspective. “The sector embeds substantial employment potential for skilled and non-skilled youth”, he said adding that profitable self-employment ventures can be raised in the sector of milk production, marketing and processing. Speaking at the function, the Minister of State for Cooperatives, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma said that innovative measures have been initiated in cooperative sector to revive the movement and make the societies viable and profitable. He said that steps are also a foot to strengthen the functioning of various apex cooperative societies and improve their economic health. He said that Jammu and Kashmir Milk Producers Cooperative Limited has 350 societies with over 400 members in Jammu and Kashmir. “We are working to further strengthen the cooperatives sector and enhance its functional capacity”, he added.
The Minister of State for Sheep and Animal Husbandry, Mr. Ajaz Ahmed Khan in his address said that Jammu and Kashmir presently produces over 15 lakh tonnes of milk per annum and there is tremendous scope for its processing and producing milk products. He stressed on organizing more and more milk producers cooperatives in the rural areas and urged for regulating the milk prices.
Mr. Ajaz said that the Department of Animal Husbandry will provide every help to the cooperative societies for rearing quality milch cows and buffaloes besides providing health cover to the animal population.
The elected Chairman of the JKMPCL, Dr. Deen Mohammad welcomed the Chief Minister and other dignitaries and said that the JKMPCL has earned a profit of over Rs. 53 lakhs during the last year. “Of this, we are distributing over Rs.48 lakhs to the members as bonus”, he said. He said that presently 20000 liters of raw milk is processed in the two milk plants at Jammu and Srinagar and the SNOWCAP brand of milk marketed in the state is receiving more and more popularity for its quality and freshness.
