| Omar countering UPA policies:Congress feels | | | Early Times Report
Jammu,January 15:-The recent statements and remarks by the National Conference leadership on the issues of autonomy, withdrawal of troops, repeal of Armed Forcs(special powers)Act and on the need for the resumption of composite dialogue between Delhi and Islamabad seem to have strained its relations with the Congress.A number of senior congress leaders said that Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,in his bid to outstrip his arch political rival Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, has started trying to make people believe that autonomy was round the corner. This way Omar was planning to ignore the congress stand on the issue of autonomy. Congress leaders said that "we have supported a discussion on the issue after we are convinced that Sagir Ahmed,in his report, had not directly recommended grant of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir." They said that Sagir Ahmed had favoured a debate on the issue and the National Conference leadership was trying to draw political mileage out of it.One Congress leader said that Omar Abdullah had begun taking the Congress, which is its partner in the Government running, for granted. He said that the coalition dharma called for a joint stand on ticklish and sensitive issues. They said that it was unfortunate that several senior National Conference leaders, including four ministers, had been trying to sow seeds of discord between the Congress and the National Conference. They said it was the result of inherent differences between Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah on various political and administrative issues. These senior NC leaders and ministers belonged to the Farooq camp and were trying to take he chief minister for granted. The Congress leaders said that Omar Abdullah should know it that Delhi has opposed resumption of composite dialogue with Pakistan till Islamabad did not take adequate steps for dismantling the terror infrastructure which could ensure that export of terrorism to India was fully stopped. They said still Omar,in his bid to outwit the Muftis, was pleading in favour of the resumption of the dialogue.Referring to the recent incidents of militancy related violence in some parts of the state, especially in the Kashmir valley the congress leaders said that the centre had taken the right decision to keep withdrawal of troops and lifting of ban on pre-paid cell phone services in abeyance but Omar Abdullah continued to harp on reduction of troops and on the need for resumption of pre-paid mobile services. They said this way Omar was trying to oppose all the major decisions of the Congress led UPA Government. They wanted Omar to set his house in order instead of trying to poke in the internal affairs of the Congress.
