| CRPF take over highway security | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 15: After twenty years, the security of the Srinagar-Jammu highway was entrusted to the central reserve police force (CRPF) Friday. According to reports, a meeting of Unified Command was held at Jammu on January 12 with the Defense Minister, AK Antony in chair. The meeting, reports said, relieved army of the task of highway security after 20 years. The decision of entrusting the security of the highway to CRPF was also taken in the meeting. . The Highway security was entrusted to the Army in 1989 when militancy commenced in the state. However, ever since the “situation took a favourable turn”, New Delhi decided to replace army with para military troops and police. Army has already been withdrawn from Srinagar and all major towns. The police have been told to gear up for a leading role in state’s security. The Defense Minister during his recent visit to the state also assured withdrawal of army from all school buildings and hospitals. The civil administration has linked CRPF take over a sign of normalcy in the state. However, the CRPF has not commented on the take over.
