| Militants hurl grenades at CRPF in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report Srinagar Jan 16: Unidentified militants hurled two grenades in quick succession at a CRPF picket in old city area here one of which hit an armoured vehicle, police said today. The second grenade did not explode and there was no casualty in the incident which occurred late last evening, police said adding that the picket was manned by jawans of the 49 Battalion at Kawadara. Following the incident and a similar attack on a police station in Sopore, 55 kms from here, security has been stepped up and frisking of vehicles intensified ahead of Republic Day celebrations to thwart plans of militants to unleash violence. In the city, especially in the busy Lal Chowk area, which witnessed a fierce 22-hour-long gun battle between militants and security-men last week, random searches have been stepped up by paramilitary forces and state police. A hawk-eyed vigil was being kept at the Bakshi stadium, the main venue of the Republic day function in Kashmir. The army has also intensified patrolling in rural areas ahead of the Republic day because of sudden militant attacks in the past two weeks. Worth to recall here a policeman was among two persons killed and six others were injured when militants attacked Sopore Police Station in Baramulla district with grenades and gunfire twice yesterday followed by the Lal Chowk Terror Attack incident in which security forces killed two militants, including a Pakistani terrorist. |
