| Royal fish rearing in private sector this year: Ajaz | | Jammu gets Chinese type hatchery | | Early Times Report Jammu Jan 17: Minister for Hajj & Auqaf and Fisheries, Mr. Ajaz Ahmad Khan today visited the Regional Fish Farmers Development Agency and Fish farm at Ghoumanhasan today and inaugurated a Chinese type circular hatchery at the farm. The hatchery comprises two breeding pools and incubation pools besides a spawnery. The hatchery has a production capacity of one crore spawns of Indian and Chinese carps. This would further give boost to fish production in the State. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Minister said the focus of the Government is to encourage and promote private sector in fish farming in a big way. He said the Government is making efforts for infrastructure development in the sector and asked the officers and fish farmers to develop a taste for fish consumption among people in a big way so that it can be developed as a supplementary crop. For this, he asked them to undertake an awareness programme in the coming month. Mr. Ajaz directed convergence of fisheries development programmes in districts with schemes like Prime Ministers Reconstruction Plan, National Rural Employment Gurantee Scheme, Rshtriya Krishi Vigyan Yojna and asked the District officers of Fisheries Department to synchronise the same with departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Rural Development. He said under PMRP 481 fish farms were set up in the State and 21 more are being developed. Responding to the demands of fish farmers, the Minister directed setting up of marketing facilitation counters at the district offices of Fisheries Department. He also assured them to look into their demand of maintenance grants for fish ponds being developed by them. Also, he said, a fish marketing centre is being set up at Narwal, Jammu. On promoting Trout, Mr. Ajaz said the rearing of the Royal fish in private sector in J&K would start from this year for which adequate funds have been earmarked. He said J&K has an edge in Trout rearing as it is found nowhere else in the country. He said Government is looking into the possibility of exporting Trout to Dubai and other places for which facilities like cold chain etc need to be developed. On visiting the farm, the Minister was told that farm spread over 46 kanals comprises five rearing ponds and four nurseries besides the hatchery inaugurated today.
Director, Fisheries, Mr. T. Angchuk and senior officers of Fisheries Department besides about a hundred fish farmers of Jammu province attended the function. On the occasion, Mr. Kuldeep Kumar of Samba, Mr. Parvez Ahmad of Banihal and Mr. Showket Ali of Rajouri were awarded as the best fish farmers.
