Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan17: The Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today joined the struggle with the community residing in other 12 North-Western states of country including Rajasthan who are fighting for raising of a full-fledged ‘Gujjar-Regiment’ in Indian Army on the Patron of ‘Jat’, ‘Rajput’ and ‘Dogra’ Regiments but at the same time the community expressed strong resentment over unwarranted delay in raising of ‘Gujjar Scouts’ stands approved in J&K and said “its intolerable”.
“The struggle is going on since 1947 for a separate regiment of Gujjars in Indian Army”, said Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, a main organization of Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir adding “now we have also decided to join hands with Gujjars of other states of the country to fight more forcefully and vigorously to achieve this long pending goal”.
Dr Javaid Rahi further questioned that why the decision of Government of India taken on December,22, 2003 has not been implemented where under it was approved that a new force comprising Gujjars and Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir would be raised for deployment on the hilly terrains of the state to serve the people residing in border and Pir Panjal areas of the state. The proposed force was to be named as the “Gujjar Scouts” and was designed on the pattern of Ladakh Scouts.
Rahi said that even it was reported in a section of press that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had also approved this proposal in January 2004.
Dr Rahi said as per reports , initially it was decided that Gujjar Scouts would be drawn from 1000 youngsters of the Gujjar and Bakarwal community who are known for their bravery and valor in the state, but we feel that some anti-tribal forces in the state had sabotaged this proposal before it could be implemented. He said we the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir also fight for implementation of this long pending approved proposal.
Dr Rahi said that our organization on belaf of Gujjars of J&K had also interacted with Gujjar leaders of other states to seek their help in pressurizing the central government to implement the decision of raising of ‘Gujjar Scouts’. He said the matter was also taken up with Sachin Pilot Union Minister of State for Communication and Technology, and top Gujjar leader of India Col (Retd) Kirori Singh Bainsla President of Gurjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti , Rajasthan who led the movement of Gujjars in Rajasthan. They assured all help to Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir for pressing the Union Home and Defence Ministries to implement the decision of raising ‘Gujjar Scouts immediately.
Dr Rahi appealed the Gujjars to remain united for achieving the goal.
