| ‘Doctor Palta’- A comedy in Hindustani staged by Natrang | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 17: In its weekly theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre, Natrang Theatre group staged Hindustani adaptation of a famous Punjabi comedy ‘Doctor Palta’ here today at its studio. The play was directed by Balwant Thakur. Set in the background of a small town of Punjab in the late sixties, the play ‘Doctor Palta’ is also a contemporary satire depicting the early struggle of professionals striving to settle down in their careers. Payara Singh Palta, the central character in the play, after loosing every penny to complete bachelor’s in Dental Surgery struggles a lot to get a job but in vain and finally decides to setup his own clinic to earn his livelihood but he confronts with a lot of problems in the absence of resources. There is no client, no work, no money, which amounts to lot of frustration to him. Here strikes an idea to him to experiment new ways to attract clients by using the latest tools of marketing. To begin with he prepares his beautiful wife to become a stylish attractive nurse so at least her beauty may lure some clients. The experiment becomes counterproductive as the doctor’s own friends start showering advances on her which results into yet another frustration. In those days of early sixties having a telephone line used to be a high class status symbol. Dr Palta now plans to have a telephone line at the clinic to boast of having over whelming response to his practice and here the turn is given strictly through an appointment. The telephone department installs an instrument in the clinic but asks him to wait for the activation. Dr Palta could not hold himself and wanted to make best use of the instrument. He advises his wife now to assist him by creating telephone ring sounds through a table bell. Whenever some client makes the entry she is to play the bell as if his telephone is ringing. Here starts series of hilarious events one succeeding the other. The drama reaches to a climax when Dr Palta continues his posed telephonic conversation before a telephone lineman who had come to connect his instrument with the line. Rahul Singh was at his best in portraying the clownish Doctor Palta. His wife was played equally well by Tejasvi Sharma. Mohit Sharma in his short appearance kept the audience spellbound. Others who did remarkably well included Rohit Verma and Ashutosh Kohli.
