Fortnight theatre festival of plays gets underway
1/18/2010 9:42:02 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 18

Former Minister and Member Parliament, Choudhary Lal Singh today inaugurated fortnight long festival of plays at Abhinav Theatre.
In his inaugural address, he appreciated the role of state cultural Academy for promoting performing arts in the state.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zaffar Iqbal Manhas said that activities like the play festival were part and parcel of Cultural Academy’s mandate and the institution would continue to promote them.
On the first day, a play ‘Visarjan’ was staged. The play is based on Rabinder Nath Tagore’s novel ‘Rajrishi’. The play ‘Visarjan’ is one of the finest creations in poetry by eminent playwright and novel laureate, Rabinder Nath Tagore.
It was initially written as a full length novel namely Rajrishi in which he created the finest work of literature to visualise tragedy. Tagore took the first part of the novel and with the essence of poetry framed the play ‘Visarjan’ in Bengali.
The play has been artistically adopted in Dogri by Kumar A. Bharti while Mukesh Kumar Chalota, Isha Taggar and Jai Singh played the lead roles in ‘Visarjan’. The beauty of the adopted version of the original play is that the lyrical dialogues in poetry have been retained in their original form.
The play is based on the orthodoxies of society and mythological concept of life. ‘Visarjan’ is in fact based on the blind faith of people performing rituals like “Bali Pratha”. Tagore, who originally wrote it, detested Bali Pratha and used the play to abolish it. ‘Visarjan’ is a period play where the general class of the people remains subordinate to the ruling class.
At the time when Tagore penned it down, it was kind of a bold statement against practices which still exist in the contemporary society. For today’s performance of the play Kanwer Iqbal did set designing while Kamal Mohini did costume designing. Make up work was taken care of by Manoj Dhamir while Surinder Manhas did music composing. ‘Visarjan’ was presented on stage by Natraj Natya Kunj, Jammu.
A galaxy of people from diverse backgrounds was present at the Abhinav Theatre to watch the play.
At the concluding hour Additional Secretary, Cultural Academy Jammu, Savita Bakshi presented the vote of thanks. The programme proceedings were conducted by senior Drama Instructor, Dr. Sudhir Mahajan.
