| Pensioners take out protest rally, raise slew of demands | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 18
Accusing the state government of failing to resolve the issues of retired persons, Jammu and Kashmir Pensioners Association today organised a protest a rally to express resentment against the administration. The rally was organised under the chairmanship of Govind Ram Sharma, convenor of the association at Vivekanand Chowk who accused the State and Central governments of failing to control the prices of essential commodities, saying that the common man is facing acute financial hardship due to sky rocketing prices of essential commodities. The association asked the state government to fulfill the demands of the pensioners which have been made earlier so that the pensioners could heave a sigh of relief. The pensioners were demanding release of arrears and revision of pension with effect from January 1, 2006 to June 30, 2009 in one installment, additional quantum of pension in favour of the state pensioners/ family pensioners after attaining the age of 80 years, 85 years, 90 years, 95 years, 100 years and above at the rate of 20 per cent, 30 per cent, 40 per cent, 50 per cent and 100 per cent respectively on the analogy of center government, enhancement of medical allowance from Rs 300 to Rs 1000 or sanctioning of alternative reimbursement medical scheme as is applicable to the Central government pensioners in favour of the state pensioners, release of 6 per cent Dearness Allowance arrears from January 1, 2009 to June 30, 2009 and 5 per cent Dearness Allowance pending since July 1, 2009 and sanctioned by the government. The Association has warned the State Government that if the demands are not fulfilled by February 15, 2010 the association would hold protests across the state. N.D Sharma, Jagdish Dogra, Swarn Singh, Ram Lai Sharma, Vakil Singh, O.P Gupta, K.L Basotra, Kamal Bhardwaj and others spoke on the occasion.
