| Governors’ appointment kicks off demand for more changes | | | ABID SHAH NEW DELHI, JAN 18: The recent appointments of Governors for as many as nine States have raised expectations for change and triggered hope for more or new appointments cutting across Government posts and organisational positions in the ruling Congress Party. The dividing line between chores of a Ministry and organisational duties have been getting thinner despite that Congress-led United Progressive Alliance is now in office for its second term and that is how multiple functioning on the part of Congress bigwigs is coming for resentment. Often senior Congress Ministers are also party general secretaries and have also been given the charge or post of observers for different States. Thus, Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed was repeatedly asked by reporters here today about the imminent changes in the organisational set up of his party. Though the spokesman dismissed these questions as this being the prerogative of the party high command, meaning Sonia Gandhi, yet the Governor’s appointment, mainly that of MK Naraynan to send him to Kolkata Raj Bhavan from South Block in order to avoid multiplicity of authority affecting decision making by Union Home Minister has taken attention to multiple functioning at the Congress’ organisational level. And since there have been reports about difference in perceptions on Kashmir among other things between P Chidambaram and Naraynan, similar situations in organisational matters have come under focus. The present AICC incharge for Jammu and Kashmir Prithviraj Chavan is a also Central Minister. As per Congress insiders he could not bring down rivalry in the State party because of separate followings and preferences of J&K Congressmen for State party president Saifuddin Soz and former State Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Azad is now a Central Minister as well as AICC general secretary with the charge of two big States. Such multiplicity is now under attack by party men, giving rise to expectations for a change since until the first term in office Congress was marked by its focus on the organisation building which gave way to “complacency”, according to an old party worker. He on condition of anonymity said that demand for grater democratisation at the organisational level in the party has of late been gaining strength. Not only this but several ministers of State have also been resentful for either allotment of very trivial work for them or shunning them through other ways by their Cabinet bosses. And, thus, Sonia Gandhi took a note of this asking junior ministers or MOS for being shared with work by their senior ministers. Thus, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called a meeting of all MOS tomorrow in order to hear and discuss their grievances.
