Cold wave sweeps J&K

Srinagar, Jan 18: After showing signs of some improvement, cold conditions intensified in Jammu and Kashmir this morning as mercury slipped to sub-zero in many parts of the state.

Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 1.2 degree Celsius as against 1.4 deg C yesterday, the Met office said.

The region had some relief from the cold conditions yesterday because of cloudy skies.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the valley at minus 4.0 deg C followed by Pahalgam in south Kashmir at 3.0 deg C.

Qazigund recorded minus 1.8 deg C followed by Kupwara at minus 1.7 deg C and Kokernag at minus 0.7 deg C.

The night temperature in Jammu was at 5.4 deg C as compared to 7.2 deg C yesterday.

Banihal was the coldest with a minimum of minus 0.5 deg C as against 2.6 deg C yesterday.

Katra recorded 7.5 deg C followed by Batote 4.6 deg C and Bhaderwah 1.7 deg C.

However, there was improvement in night temperature in Ladakh with Leh recording minus 12.8 deg C and Kargil recording minus 12.6 deg C as compared to minus 13.2 deg C and minus 14.6 deg C each on Sunday.
