| Cops, PDD daily wagers again face to face , 4 injured in clashes | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 19 : At least six people, including four agitating daily wager employees of Power Development Department (PDD), were injured when police foiled their march towards Civil Secretariat and resorted to lathicharge in this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir this morning.
Braving cold wave conditions large number of employees had gathered inside the PDD office in Parade ground area and when they tried to come out of the office complex the heavy posse of police force deployed in the area opened lathicharge on them in which over half a dozen PDD employees were injured.
The brutal police action led to pent up anger among the PDD employees who started raising slogans against the inhuman treatment meted out to the peace demonstrations.
The PDD employees are agitating for the last over one month, demanding regularisation and release of pending salaries.
The PDD daily wage employees had given a call to take out a procession and marched towards Civil Secretariat to highlight their plight as the state government has turned a nelsons eye towards their demands.Meanwhile, expressing concern over their bleak future the PDD employees lambasted the state government for not paying attention to their demands. The daily wagers said we were sitting inside the office premises when police force locked the gate from outside and opened lathicharge. The PDD employees said that the daily wagers have completed more than 15 years in service but still the state government have not formulated any concrete policy to absorb them
Meanwhile, an eyewitness said, ''four PDD daily wager employees were injured, one of them seriously. Two police personnel were also injured in the fierce battle.
''The employees later staged demonstration at Parade Chowk and halted the normal traffic thus brining it to a standstill for hours,'' they said.
The PDD daily wagers, who are agitating for the past two-month are demanding regularisation and release of their pending salaries under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir PDD Daily Wagers Association since January 4. They have also submitted a copy of memorandum to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra here.
Meanwhile BJP has strongly condemned the Police Lathi charge on the Daily Wagers for agitating their demands for regularizing of their services and payment of their wages regularly.
Condemning the brutal police lathi-charge on PDD daily wagers during the peaceful demonstration by them in Parade area of the city, the BJP leaders today asked the government to wake up and do just with all sections of people, including employees, as per its commitment.
BJP former State President & MLA Jammu east, accompanied by party MLA from Marh Constituency Ch. Sukhnandan, visited Parade area of the city soon after getting the news of lathicharge resorted to by Police and expressed their sympathies with these protesting daily wagers of the PDD. They were shocked to find that several daily wagers were injured in the brutal police action with some of them having suffered serious injuries.
Interacting with the employees, they assured them that their issue alongwith those of others will be raised in the coming assembly session.
Prof . Chaman Lal Gupta too condemned this act and said was a strange democratic Government that these workers are being met with Lathies although there are large number of vacancies in the PDD department where these workers can be absorbed.
Prof. Gupta alleged that there appears that certain elements in the ruling hierarchy are out to create problems and force the poor workers to adopt for other modes of agitation rather than peaceful demonstrations to press their demands.
He impressed upon the State Chief Minister to look into the matter and settle this problem, which is lingering on for a long time now but for unrealistic, rather inhumane approach adopted by the men in authority.
