Chaman loyalists up for ‘son-rise’ in BJP
1/19/2010 11:01:05 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 19: Loyalists of former Minister of State for Defence and sitting BJP, MLA Chaman Lal Gupta have started lobbying to secure the coveted post of party’s state general secretary, for his son Anil Gupta.

Interestingly, Anil Gupta had resigned from the membership of National Working Committee of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) during last Lok Sabha election held on April 23, 2009 and had threatened to contest the said polls as independent candidate from Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary Constituency, if party ticket is not announced in his name.

However, after intervention of party high command that warned Gupta for contesting the election against the party candidate, Nirmal Singh, he dropped the decision of contesting the Lok Sabha election.

“Now after the appointment of Shamsher Singh Manhas as new president of state BJP unit, lobbying is on to ensure re-entry of Anil Gupta into the party folds that too with elevation as party’s state general secretary,” insiders in state BJP revealed to Early Times.

BJP’s state president Shamsher Singh Manhas told Early Times that “party’s new team including the office bearers and executive body members will be announced in another fortnight.” He however cleared that “the announcement will be made after holding deliberations with party high command and also meeting with party legislators and senior leaders of the state.”

BJP enjoys as the main opposition party of Jammu Province with the strength of 11 Legislators in the House.

If sources in BJP are to be believed, out of the total strength of 11 MLAs, veteran party leader and sitting Legislator from Jammu West, Assembly Constituency, Chaman Lal Gupta enjoys the support of at least five that includes MLAs Jagdish Raj Sapolia from Basholi, Durga Dass from Hiranagar, Baldev Sharma from Katra and Lal Chand from Bani Assembly segments. Besides the said support, several other senior party leaders too are mustering support within the party in favour of Anil Gupta, describing his as young face.

Political observers opine that, “there are chances that Chaman Lal Gupta may not contest next Assembly Poll, which will be due in the year 2014. And as part of strategy, Gupta will pave way for his son to seek party mandate for his son at that time. Furthermore, as Anil Gupta had already worked in Jammu West Constituency to gather support in favour of his father during the previous election, so a ground is being prepared for Anil Gupta to remain active in the state politics especially within the party-fold.”
