| Pak set afire forests on Poonch periphery | | High alert in Poonch town; people watch flames from rooftops | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 20: Troops were put on high alert in and around Poonch this evening after Pak troops set ablaze forests on the Line of Control (LoC), about 2.5 km from the main Poonch town. The billowing flames could be seen from Poonch town. People watched them from their rooftops. Soon after the fire spread from across the LoC to this side, troops fanned out in different directions, plugging all entry routes to Poonch town, while police laid ambushes at different places to foil any infiltration bid by militants. This was a very familiar Pak pattern. Forest fires and unprovoked firing were always followed by infiltration attempts, official sources said. This was the fourth incident of fire on the LoC in less than a month. In the earlier three incidents, two in Balakote and one in K G sector, infiltrators had come close to the border fencing, but they had fled back after firing by troops. Apprehending an infiltration bid tonight also, troops had stepped up vigil. On the second line of defence, police were patrolling roads and streets in the town and had laid ambushes at some strategic points, the sources added. The fire started from the PoK forests at about 8 pm and soon spread to this side of the LoC. The flames had engulfed about 200 mt stretch of forests and were spreading at the time of going to the print.
