| VC inaugurates UNESCO workshop on ‘human rights, world peace’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 21- Vice Chancellor University of Jammu Prof Varun Sahni today inaugurated a 3 day workshop on “Sensitizing Youth for Protecting Human Rights, World Peace and Environment”. The workshop was organized by Model Institute of Education and Research (MIER) in association with Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, under the Associated Schools Project Network Dr. Rajive Gupta, Director, College Development Council, University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour and Dr. Arun. K. Gupta, Chairman, MIER and Chancellor of J&K State for International Association of Educators for World Peace (IAEWP) presided over the function. On this occasion the students of MIER College presented a group song related to the theme of the workshop which was greatly appreciated by the audience. In his inaugural address Prof Sahni, greatly appreciated the efforts made by UNESCO and MIER to discuss such significant themes related to protecting Human Rights, World Peace and Environment and also for sensitizing the youth of the state regarding the same. He observed that the theme of this workshop has not only global but regional relevance and especially in our state which is going through a period of stress and strife. He laid stress on awareness concerning environmental issues and the role which the youth need to play in conserving it so that the quality of life can be developed and sustained. He highlighted the UN charter which clearly calls for erecting the defences for peace so that the thought of war can be eliminated from the human mind. Dr. Arun K. Gupta, while welcoming the distinguished guests expressed, his warm regards for Prof. Varun Sahni for inaugurating the Conference and for his maiden visit to the institute. He described him as an academic visionary who had contributed a lot to the understanding of internal relations in the modern context. He also thanked other dignitaries for gracing the occasion and complimented the delegates for their participation and contribution to the workshop. Congratulating the organizers he said that the institute is looking forward to greater collaboration between UNESCO and other allied agencies for promotion of world peace, international brotherhood, protection of human rights and environmental preservation. He also highlighted the role of MIER in furthering UN ideals as an associated school of UNESCO since 1991.
