New OPD at HGandhi nagar hospital thrown open

JAMMU, JANUARY 21 – Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah Thursday expressed determination of his government to catapult the status of the state’s health sector to No. 1 position in the country. “We enjoyed this honour several years ago and my endeavour is to restore it back for the state”, he added.
Addressing a function after inaugurating Rs.10.50 crore OPD block of Government Hospital, Gandhinagar here, Mr. Omar said that consolidation in health sector has been underlined as priority concern of the government.
The Chief Minister said that unless hospitals are properly equipped with the necessary equipment and manned by competent and adequate medical and para-medical staff the public cannot be benefited on this count in a befitting and required manner. “Measures have already been initiated to strengthened the healthcare centres and made these full functional especially in rural and far-off areas to ensure adequate health cover for all”, he added.
Mr. Omar said that state government is working with the Union Health Ministry for seeking short term courses to train doctors and para-medical staff to run the specialized departments in the health institutions. He said adding that the Union Health Ministry is also being pursued to allot additional quota of seats in super-specialty courses to the state. He said that the government has also asked the recruiting agencies to put in place fast track recruitment programme for the selection of doctors and technicians in Health and Medical Education Departments. He said during the current year over 1200 doctors are likely to be appointed for the health institutions in rural areas.
The Chief Minister said that he has asked the Health Minister to rationalize the placement of doctors and para-medical staff in the health institutions making merit, service period in the rural areas and efficiency the benchmark. “There are hospitals where doctors and para-medical staff is more than sufficient while as many health centres in rural areas are without required number of doctors. This disparity has to be done away with”, he asserted.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Health, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma gave details of the measures Health Department has initiated in the state to upgrade health institutions and provide necessary staff to the hospitals and health centres. He said that the advantage of various centrally sponsored schemes is being fully utilized to improve the health sector in the state.
The OPD block of Gandhinagar consists of a 4-storyed building including basement over an area of 10000 sq. feet. The building houses surgery OPD, ortho OPD and diagnostic in ground floor while as pediatrics OPD, gynae, eye and ENT OPDs are in first floor and psychiatry, dental, medicine and skin OPDs are in the 2nd floor. The 3rd floor comprises accommodation of conference hall, seminar hall and canteens for doctors and staff. The basement besides other facility will accommodate parking of about 50 vehicles.
The facility will cater to the needs of large number of public in the city.
