EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 21
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz today completely ruled out any factionalism in State Congress, saying “it is united. We are making efforts to make it stronger.” He also put all speculations regarding differences between ruling coalition partners to rest and said that there is no threat to the Omar Abdullah led coalition government. “There is no threat to the coalition in Jammu and Kashmir. It is running smoothly. There are no differences between Congress and National Conference and the coalition was getting stronger day by day,” the JKPCC chief told reporters here. Over factionalism within the Congress party, he said, “There is no groupism or factionalism in the party. Congress is united. We all are making efforts to make it stronger. Co-ordination committee is doing its job in a better way.” He, however, admitted the presence of some “disgruntled elements” within the party and said that it would not affect the party’s prospect in larger context. In reply to a question regarding Ladakh United Territory Front’s demand of UT status to Ladakh which has been supported by the local unit of the Congress, Soz said, “The stand of local unit of Congress should not be given much importance.” The JKPCC chief informed that the process of party membership is still going on and it would be completed by the end of July 2010. “Nearly 6.5 membership forms have been given to local units in the State and the process would be completed in the month of July. We will also expedite the booth level elections to strengthen the Congress at gross root level,” he disclosed. Former Finance Minister of Haryana and observer for membership drive, Choudhary Varinder Singh was also present in the conference.
