| Ex-presidents’ legacy ruling the roost in BJP, NC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 21
The ruling National Conference and the opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have colossal differences in their ideology and doctrine, yet they share one common thing here-the state president of saffron party and the regional president of NC are “abiding” the dictates of their predecessors.
Both incumbents of president post, Shamsher Singh Manhas of BJP and Rattan Lal Gupta of NC are supposed to be “loyalists” of former presidents, Ashok Khajuria (BJP) and Ajay Sadhotra (NC) respectively.
If insiders in both political outfits are to be believed, though Shamsher Singh and Rattan Lal Gupta have occupied the coveted post of president in the respective organisations yet they are virtually working on the ‘will’ of their former bosses.
“Whether it was the Central University row or thwarting of malicious propaganda of opposition parties, Ajay Sadhotra rules the roost and guided his successor, Rattan Lal Gupta, who is supposed to be his loyalist, on critical occasions, besides playing his role in taking important decisions pertaining to executive body of the party,” said party sources.
Sources maintained, “During the Central University row, Sadhotra had countered the opposition of Jammu based political and social groups demanding full-fledged Central University in Jammu. The influence of Sadhotra could be gauged that Rattan Lal Gupta, who remained present during media briefings, had not uttered a single word over the party’s stand on the Central University.”
Recently, when Mehbooba Mufti, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president had described the National Conference led coalition government’s one year achievements as “bundle of lies” and cautioned the people against “gimmicks” of the ruling party during a public rally at Jammu on January 7, Sadhotra along with a battery of NC leaders including Rattan Lal Gupta had defended the ruling dispensation by terming the remarks of PDP president as “evident frustration”.
Interestingly, the provincial president preferred to maintain silence and asked his predecessor to address the press conference.
Similarly, the BJP state president is no exception to it. If one reads the press statement between the lines issued by the party media cell yesterday, we come to understand that it was released in the name of Ashok Khajuria wherein he had demanded security cover for 18 senior leaders of the party. “If the state president, Shamsher Singh Manhas was in the meeting between Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda and BJP leaders, why was the press statement not issued in the name of Shamsher Singh?” questioned a senior party leader withholding his identity.
Political observers believe, “Passing on their legacies, both NC provincial president and BJP state president are working on the terms and dictates of their predecessors. As groupism plays a pivotal role in a political organisation, both the presidents are seems to be the part of such arrangement.”
