J&K to have new power policy : Omar

JAMMU, JANUARY 21 – Highlighting the importance of hydro energy in the state’s socio-economic prosperity, the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah said that a comprehensive power development policy is being formulated to put in place three track hydro power generation strategy and rope in investors in the field. “We have to take faster steps to make the good of the available water resources and fill up the gap between the demand and generation in power sector”, he said adding that Jammu and Kashmir with highest hydro energy potential should not lag behind in meeting the electricity requirements.
Addressing the Himalayan Power Producers Association (HPPA) here, the Chief Minister said that his government has flagged power sector as one of the most focused areas to catapult hydro energy generation from present short fall situation to the self-reliance status.
Mr. Omar said that the draft power policy will be placed on the internet for public domain to receive suggestions, comments and views from experts and general public to make the document comprehensive, holistic and befitting.
The Chief Minister said that under the three tier power development programme, “we are constructing power projects in public sector, as joint ventures and in IPP mode”. He added that the state has embarked upon gigantic programme to double the indigenous power production in next five year and add nearly 3000 MW to the system in the same period.
Mr. Omar welcomed the intention of Himalayan Power Producers Association for construction of small hydro projects in the state. He said government would provide all facilities to the producers in this regard asking them to develop liaison with the local players in the field and come up with feasible proposals for small power projects.
The President, HPPA, Mr. Arun Sharma gave a power point presentation on the occasion and said that the Association has successfully launched projects in Himachal, Uttrakhand, Sikkim, North-East states, Nepal and Bhutan. “We want to extend our technical expertise and help to Jammu and Kashmir in the power energy sector”, he said.
Expressing fullest faith in the dynamic leadership of Mr. Omar Abdullah, the President said that the Association is capable of establishing about 100 small hydel projects in the state within 5 to 6 years. He also lauded the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah for encouraging them to launch ventures in Jammu and Kashmir and help harness the rich hydro electric potential of the state.
The General Secretary, Mr. C. J. Rai, Vice President, Mr. Amar Nath Kaushal and the member of HPPA, Mr. Virender Dogra also spoke in the meeting and explained some of the projects established by the Association in various places in the Himalayan region.
The meeting was also attended by the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr. Khursheed Ahmed Ganai and Principal Secretary, Power Development Department, Mr. B. R. Sharma.
