| House Panel calls for environmental awareness | | | Early Times Report JAMMU JANUARY 21-The Environment Committee (EC) of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council has called upon the Forest and its allied Departments to work with missionary zeal and sensitize people about environmental issues and challenges faced to the State. The Committee met under the Chairmanship of MLC Mr. Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy, here today. The Committee suggested for preparing a comprehensive project report to enjoin Pollution Control Board with the powers for protection, abatement and control of environmental pollution. The Committee also called for setting up Pollution Control Authorities at district levels. It was informed that the total geographical area in Jammu and Kashmir under forest cover has been increased nearly by one percent which was acknowledged at the National Level by awarding the State Forest Department. . The Committee was briefed about the main functions and activities of the Pollution Control Board. The Committee also discussed, threadbare, various issues including Environment Protection Act. The meeting was informed that the Board has taken stringent measures against units that are not complying with environmental laws. During last three years, the Board has issued 2926 notices, enforced 272 closures and kept in abeyance 55 Closure orders on compliance. It was also informed in the meeting that the Department of Environment will develop environmental parks in Rajouri, Poonch and other districts of the State during the next financial year. Legislators, Mr. Jahangir Ahmad Mir, Mr. Showkat Ahmad Ganai and Mr. Nizamu-Ud-Din Khatana gave their valuable suggestions for making J&K, a pollution free State. The meeting was attended by Commissioner/ Secretary, Forest Mr. Shantmanu, Chairman, Pollution Control Board, Mr. Vinod Ranjan, Secretary Legislative Council Mr. G.R Mahboobi and other concerned Senior Officers of Forest and Council Secretariat attended the meeting.
