| Public meeting at Kathua | | Govt keen to resolve issues of nomadic tribes, Altaf tells Gujjars | |
Jammu Jan 22: Minister for Forest Environment and Ecology, Mian Altaf Ahmed has said that Indo-Pak relations have direct bearing on the development of Jammu and Kashmir, adding the good relations are in the best interest of people of the State. Addressing a public meeting at Kathua, the Minister said that people have given their mandate to the Government which is duty bound to satiate their aspirations, besides mitigating the grievances confronting by them. He said that the Government has formulated a mechanism to ascertain and redress the grievances of the people. Highlighting the endeavours of the Governments putting in place the basic amenities to the people, Mian Altaf said that the Government, headed by Mr. Omar Abdullah, believes in ensuring equitable development of all the three regions besides all the communities of the State. While interacting with the people, the Minister was apprised about the common problems confronting to Gujjar Community. They raised the issue of provision of insufficient funds under Tribal Sub Plan, employment opportunities, particularly under ReT Scheme, posting of Urdu teachers in local schools, medicare facilities to their live stocks etc. The Minister assured them that these issues would be taken up with the Chief Minister for early redressal. He said that Government is making all out efforts to mitigate the problems of the people, adding the problems of the Gujjar Community would be taken care of on priority. Ex MLA Dhian Chand, NC leader Ch Zaffar Ahmad and other leaders also spoke on the occasion. Referring the demand of the people regarding provision of employment opportunities, the Minister said that the recently announced employment package by the Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah, would go a long way in curbing the unemployment and urged upon the youth to come forward and avail the benefit of the scheme. The Minister directed that DFO Kathua to look into the demands for timber and firewood in the area. Earlier, at an officers meeting, the Minister took stock of working of various schemes run by the Forest Department. The Minister was told that under Shiwaliks (Ujh) Project, sanctioned under Prime Ministers’ package in Kathua district, Rs.18.55 crore have been utilized so far out of approved outlay of Rs. 29.85 crore. The meeting was informed that 32000 hectares of the area have been treated in the district, the project has been started in 2004-2005 and the aim of the project is to cover forest land, common land and private land by way of planting, horticulture and agro forestry activities, soil and water conservation works and water harvesting structures.
