| MLA threatens to observe Jan 26 as black day | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 24: In protest against denial of permission to observe the last rites of an ordinary villager of Langate (Handwara), the concerned MLA, Engineer Rashid has threatened to observe Republic Day as black day. According to reports, a villager Ghulam Muhammad Sofi passed away Saturday. Incidentally his Rasam-e-Chaharum falls on Republic Day. The army deployed in the area, reports said, has urged the bereaved family to observe the last rites before or after January 26 for security reasons. Reports said the bereaved family apprised him of the development. The MLA terming the `army order’ as interference in religion and a serious human rights violation, demanded stern action against the army officer. He has also urged the people to observe January 26 as a black day in the area. “The officer has interfered in religion for which he cannot be pardoned. If action is not taken against him immediately, Handwara tehsil shall observe January 26 as black day. We shall hoist black flags across the tehsil”, he said. Engineer Rashid got as many as 24 cases registered against the army on the international human rights day.
