| J&K set to get new Congress Gen Sec | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 24: If all goes as planned at New Delhi’s 24-Akbar Road, the recent Jammu visit of Union Minister Prithviraj Chavan could well end as his last to Jammu and Kashmir as Congress General Secretary incharge of this state.
The politics in Jammu and Kashmir chapter of Congress has remained all heat and boil during the tenure of Chavan and it was during his times that divide deepened between Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz lobbies. Chavan had replaced Ambika Soni as AICC General Secretary in-charge Jammu and Kashmir affairs in 2004. Soni would always favour Azad while Chavan put Soz ahead.
Prithviraj Chavan is among seven of the nine total general secretaries incharge of various states who continue to hold the organizational posts even after having become Ministers in the Union Government. Other General Secretaries serving as Ministers are: Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik, Prithviraj Chavan, M. Veerapa Moily, A.K. Antony, V. Narayanasamy and Jairam Ramesh - are serving as union ministers.
Reports coming in from Delhi suggest that the Congress leadership is all set to go for an organizational overhaul and a new list of office bearers may be out as soon as coming Friday.
The Congress has largely stuck to a one-man-one-post norm since the mid-90s. There has been speculation of a reshuffle in the party for some time now. The new appointments are widely expected to take place in February.
Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, who is an interface between the party and the government and had resigned as a minister about three months before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections to work in the party today said in New Delhi: "there is a clear understanding in the party as to who does what job”. Fernandes is also incharge of AICC meetings, Congress sessions and working committees.
