| North India cold toll reaches 535 | | | Agencies
New Delhi, Jan 24: The cold wave continued in most parts in northern India where 14 people died, taking the toll this winter to 535 as dense fog affected rail, road and air communication in the region.
All the fresh deaths occurred in Uttar Pradesh where 506 people have died so far due to the chill this winter. Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest place in the plains as icy winds swept the city and the mercury settled at a freezing 0.2 degree celsius, the Met office said.
The region also experienced dense fog this morning which hampered road traffic and led to the cancellation of some trains as others ran late by up to 12 hours.
Ludhiana and Patiala had minimum temperatures of 5.4 degrees and 6.3 degrees respectively while Chandigarh experienced a low of five degrees, down by a degree. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum of 3.6 degrees, down by three notches, while the night temperature at Karnal was 4.4 degrees, three notches below normal.
