| Fake saffron stinks | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 25: `Fake saffron stinks’. This is how a lawyer describes a scandal involving large scale manufacture and sale of fake saffron in and outside the state. The police have arrested four persons and recovered huge quantities of fake saffron during the past two weeks.
Genuine Saffron growers Monday have been agitating the matter since the scandal came to surface. Monday they staged a demonstration outside deputy commissioner’s office at Pulwama and demanded detention of fake saffron manufacturers under public safety act (PSA).
According to reports, growers from Pampore and adjoining areas assembled outside the office of the deputy commissioner, Pulwama and raised slogans against what they called `anti-social elements’ responsible for harming and maligning the trade.
Later the growers met the deputy commissioner and demanded stern action against the culprits. The deputy commissioner assured proper action.
Meanwhile, the court rejected the bail application of four persons arrested in connection with FIR No 76 of 2010, Police Station Pampore, for manufacturing and selling fake saffron in and outside the state. Earlier the court had reserved judgement.
