| Peace may dawn on Indian subcontinent if Talibans join Govt. in Kabul | | | Early Times Report Jammu,January 26:- Winds of change have started blowing in Afghanistan which may have a healthy impact on the security scenario in India.Reports reaching here from across the border said that Afghan President,Hamid Karzai, has favoured peace talks with the Taliban leaders and in this connection he has called for taking Talibans off the UN black list.According to these reports,Karzai may request the United Nations to review the situation and in the interest of peace talks achieving success there was need for removing some Taliban leaders from the UN terrorist list. Even the leader of the UN Mission in Afghanistan has called for a major review of the situation in Afghanistan so that the names of some Taliban leaders were removed from the UN terrorist list.Reports said that the secret peace talks between the establishment in Kabul and the Talibans have reached a stage where even the Commander of US forces in Afghanistan,Gen.Stanley Mcchrystal has stated that he Talibans could join the Government at any time. He and others have favoured a major review of the US and UN policy towards the Talibans so that their demand for the release of over 750 detainees could be considered favourably.Security experts believe that once the major demands of the Talibans were conceded the extremist group could be motivated in joining the Government in Kabul. These experts have already conveyed to the US and the UN authorities that the Talibans actually want to run the Government in Afghanistan and the Al Qaeda wishing to run the Government in Saudi Arabia. It is in this context that Hamid Karzai has decided to engage the Talibans in sustained dialogue so that they abandon the path of violence and help people of Afghanistan, ravaged by terrorist violence and wars,to enjoy peace and political stability. According to these experts, once the Talibans joined the Government in Kabul it would give a major setback to the Talibans operating in Pakistan and they too may be forced to opt for peace once the establishment in Islamabad offered them some concessions. If it materialised it could cast a healthy impact on the security scenario in India, especially in th state of Jammu and Kashmir. Reports said that the US backed Afghan Government held an olive branch to the Talibans after it realised that without forging a peace agreement there was no possibility of an early end to the ongoing turmoil and violence in Afghanistan.Similarly the Talibans too have come to believe that following the decision of the US Government to deploy another 30,000 American and NATO troops in Afghanistan it was going to be difficult for the Talibans to gain control of the Government.hence they have opted for an honourable agreement with the Government. How will Pakistan react to this development ?It is too early to say anything because the establishment in Islamabad would support it while those aiding terrorist groups may not back the proposed peace talks.A section in the Pakistan Army, the ISI and the Special Service Group, which are behind anti-India activities, may try to sabotage the proposed peace agreement. At the sametime once the US was free from the Afghan turmoil it could concentrate on ridding the Indian subcontinent of the menace of terrorism.
