| PAPA terms govt action against 23 drivers improper, unjustified | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 26- Terming the government action against 23 poor drivers as improper and unjustified, the executive body of People’s Action and Public Accountability (PAPA)-NGO in a meeting here today said that punishment to poor drivers only will not help check the overloading and rash driving. The PAPA said that several other important factors are involved with the overloading and unfortunate accidents such as defunct and corrupt working of the licensing authorities, vehicles fitness boards of RTOs, weak monitoring of the district administrations relating to inadequate number of buses in particular areas and the traffic police. The organization said that its suggestions on various matters given during the last assembly session has been taken by the visionary politicians and rulers non seriously and criticized the self centered approach of the rulers and the administration for failing to take timely measures to check the menace of over loading . Members suggested that government, after seeking the broad based suggestions from different forums, should go for constituting the effective and meaningful licensing authorities as in the prevailing situations nobody feels safe on the cities roads of the state. Till then a time bound program should be ordered for verification of licenses and checking of the driving skills of alleged guilty drivers and in case of any deficiency they should be granted three month’s time to improve and qualify. The meeting also suggested that some healthy steps should be initiated by the government in order to improve the living standards of the poor and insecure community of drivers.
