| Ceasefire violated 433 times in 2009, 19 times this month | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 26: Ceasefire was put in place along the frontiers in Jammu and Kashmir in November 2003 as part of the confidence building measures (CBMs) between India and Pakistan. Since then, firing has occured along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC) every year, but an exponential rise took place in 2009. Official sources said 433 infiltration bids were made by militants last year, which were 91 more than the previous year. In the first 26 days of the first month of 2010, at least 20 infiltration bids were made by the Pak-based militants, while the ceasefire was violated about 19 times. Militants had cut realigned fencing in R S Pura sector Friday in a bid to sneak into the Indian territory. Troops were put on high alert along the borders following intelligence inputs that Pakistan would make more desperate attempts to push militants into Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of Republic Day. A multi-tier security arrangement, including deployment of troops, surveillance devices, border fencing and state and central security forces had, however, proved effective in discouraging infiltrators, the sources added. The ceasefire was violated 21 times in 2007 and only thrice in 2006. The rapid rise in the number of ceasefire violations last year, analysts say, was part of a Pak strategy to force Indian army to rework its counter-infiltration grid so that more infiltrators could be pushed into India. DIG O P Tanwar was killed in an IED blast caused by militants near the IB in Ramgarh sector in Novembner last year. He was the first officer of the rank of DIG to be killed in a militant act on the IB. To divert the attention of the border troops, Pakistan, in the last fortnight, targetted fencing and Indian positions along the LoC in Poonch four times, Their strategy, however, did not work. Sources said troops were ready to foil any infiltration bid by the Pak-based militants.
