| Shah arrested amid clashes | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 27: Twenty persons including g several police men sustained injuries in day long clashes in various parts of Srinagar as the police took into custody senior Hurriyat leader and chairman, Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah at Qamarwari today.
Reports said angry people registered strong protest at Qamarwari, Aalai Kadal, Maharaj Gunj, Wazapora and adjoining areas this morning to protest CRPF and police excesses. All shops remained closed and traffic was off the roads in these areas. The people also staged a dharnas for several hours in these areas.
Trouble started, reports said, when police tried to disperse the protesters who raised slogans against the police and the CRPF. The police action evoked severe reaction from the protesters who pelted stones, reports aid. At least 15 persons including five police men sustained injuries in these clashes.
Meanwhile, Shabir Ahmad Shah was taken into custody at Qamarwari where he had gone to express solidarity with the shopkeepers injured in CRPF action yesterday. Around a dozen associates of Shah were also arrested.
Clashes were reported from Batmaloo area as well. Reports said, scores of youth pelted stones on the police and CRPF personnel deployed in the area. Dozens of smoke shells were fired to disperse the protesters.
The people especially at Qamarwari and Maharaj Gunj accused the CRPF of ransacking shops and manhandled the shopkeepers on January 26. They demanded stern action against the erring CRPF personnel.
SP Srinagar has assured proper investigation in the allegations.
