| Induced immolation sparks protests at Parimpora | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 27: Several persons sustained injuries at Parimpora when an angry mob clashed with the police this morning. The mob was protesting `induced immolation bid’ by a woman at Batmaloo a few days ago. According to reports, a large number of men and women including close relatives of Fatima blocked the highway at Parimpora this morning. They mob tried to march towards Batmaloo where Fatima, 30, lived with her in-laws. However, the police foiled their attempt using tear smoke shells and rubber bullets. Several persons sustained injuries in the police action. A senior police official, however, denied use of rubber bullets on the protesters. “We just tried to prevent their march to Batmaloo. Had they reached Batmaloo, it would have caused a serious breach of peace and order”, he said. Fatima, according to her relatives, got married to Farooq Ahmad Bhat of Batmaloo last year. The victim’s in-laws, the relatives said, harassed her all the time and “set her ablaze Monday evening”. However, Fatima’s neighbours said they heard her deafening screams Monday evening and found her engulfed in flames. She was rushed to SMHS hospital where she is struggling for life. The incident has evoked widespread condemnation in the area. The police have been accused of inaction by the locals and the relatives of Fatima. Police Station Batmaloo has registered FIR No 7 of 2010 and investigations are on. However, no arrest has been effected till date.
