Vakil et al toeing NC line, damaging Congress base
1/27/2010 11:05:24 PM

RUSTAM

JAMMU, JAN 27: MLC and senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil is not doing justice to the Congress party, particularly in Jammu province, which has always stood solidly behind this party. In fact, he is damaging the Congress party in the state by airing views which are consistent with the views of the National Conference and which do not represent the views of the people of Jammu province. There are reasons to believe that his views may provoke explosions within the Congress. These reasons are based on the resentment his views have caused, particularly among the Jammu-based Congressmen.

That Abdul Gani Vakil is harming the interests of the Congress party and provoking Congressmen can be seen from the fact that he is not only organizing parallel functions to bring bad name to the party but by also giving his support to the controversial and pro-National Conference recommendations made by Justice Saghir Ahmed, chairman of the Working Group on Centre-State relations – recommendations made unilaterally without taking the members of the Working Group into confidence.

Vakil extended his support to these controversial recommendations, which have been rejected by all, barring the National Conference, for one reason or the other, while talking to the “office-bearers of JKPCC, who called on him at his (official) residence in Gandhi Nagar on Sunday” (Jan 25). During the interaction, Abdul Gani Vakil not just gave his unqualified support to the Saghir recommendations, but also, like the Congress Sewa Dal, accused the critics of these recommendations of “misleading people”.

“We would not allow them (critics of recommendations) to succeed in their evil designs and fight till last breath against elements, who are trying to weaken India and Congress by raking up unreal issues”, he also told the “JKPCC office-bearers”.

The senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil’s formulations on the Justice Saghir Ahmed report and those who have been opposing it bitterly and, particularly his assertion that those who have been opposing the recommendations are actually “weakening India and the Congress party” could be construed as a negation of what he said about India and the Congress party.

What Abdul Gani Vakil reportedly told the “JKPCC office-bearers” and certain former ministers, who suffered defeat in the last assembly elections because of their controversial role during the Amarnath land row, only meant that he was pursuing the National Conference line on India and the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

The National Conference stands for the withdrawal of all the Central laws and Central institutions from the state on the ground that these laws and institutions are anti-Kashmir and anti-thesis of what the National Conference obtained under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. The National Conference also stands for the withdrawal of the Indian Army from the state, as also for a mechanism that takes Islamabad, which has been bleeding India since 1947, causing terrorist attacks across the country and inciting the innocent Kashmiri Muslims to rise in revolt against India, to mean an important factor in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress party doesn’t stand for what the National Conference stands for. Even the 1975 accord between Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Abdullah had overruled the possibility of meeting the divisive and communal demands of Sheikh Abdullah.

The fact is that the Congress has been winning elections, particularly in the Jammu province on a nationalist and pro-Jammu planks. The moment the Congress party would endorse the views of the likes of Abdul Gani Vakil, who is also known for irresponsible statements against JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, the party would become untouchable in the Jammu province. For, a very vast majority of the people of Jammu (and for that matter the people of Ladakh and other religious and ethnic groups in the state) is vehemently opposed to what Abdul Gani Vakil advocated and said.

Vakil should review his stand taking into consideration the views of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and not do anything that has the potential of strengthening the National Conference, weakening India and provoking the Jammu-based Congressmen to rise in revolt.
