| Incidents that underplayed R-Day spirit | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 27: Two incidents underplayed the spirit of Republic Day in the region Tuesday. One concerns a minister who left a function halfway, while the other is linked with the district administration of Poonch which came in the eye of the storm for allegedly honouring "undeserving" people on the occasion.
A function was held in a ground at Kaili Mandi in Samba jointly by private and government schools. Cooperative Minister Manohar Lal was the chief guest.
Official sources while the function was in progress, the minister got up from his seat and started the process of distributing prizes among the meritorious students.
Some students were performing Bhangra that time. Irritated by the minister's behaviour, they left their performance midway. In protest, the principal of a private school returned his memento.
The minister, who was reportedly to attend another function, later left the spot. Because of the minister's departure, the function ended on a sad note.
In the Poonch Republic Day function, twenty five persons, including a clerk in the deputy commissioner's office and his father -- a retired tehsil education officer (TEO), were
honoured for their "valuable" contribution to the society.
Official sources said when their names were announced during the function, the people, who had gathered there, were surprised as, according to them, none of them had made any contribution to the Poonch society.
The people alleged that majority of those honoured were "yes-men" of the district administration. They also lodged their protest with Poonch deputy commissioner Kuldip Khajuria on this issue.
When contacted, Khajuria said he had assured the people to look into the matter.
The function in Poonch too ended on a sad note as some Republic Day revellers were also lathicharged there by police when they had tried to mingle with Bhangra performers.
