EARLY TIMES REPORT

Jammu: Lodging a strong protest with Pakistan Rangers over the border skirmishes on Republic Day, the BSF on Wednesday said Pakistani forward posts were instrumental in facilitating infiltration into Indian territory and warned their counterparts of a strong reaction if such incidents continued.

At a flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers, the BSF raised the issue of firing by them to provide cover to infiltrating militants and its four forward posts involved in the firing and ceasefire violation yesterday, senior BSF officer told agency.

The BSF gave all the details of weapons including RPGs, rockets and UMGs fired from across the border on the Indian posts and made it clear that such violations of border truce will not be tolerated and every action would spark a strong reaction, he said.

The Sector Commander (DIG) level flag meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, was held at Octerio Border Out Post (BoP) along the International Border in R S Pura sub-sector, he said.

One jawan was injured when Pakistani troops violated the border truce by resorting to unprovoked firing for several hours as BSF personnel foiled two infiltration bids in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.

There have been 16 infiltration bids and 6 ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops along Indo-Pak border this month.

Information from various security agencies in J&K has put the figure of total infiltration attempts in 2009 at 433, 91 more than 2008.

As per police figures, 342 infiltration attempts were made from across the border in 2008, while 2007 and 2006 reported 535 and 573 such attempts along LoC and IB in J&K, where over 100 militants managed to sneak in.

DGP Kuldeep Khoda said infiltration attempts along the borderline has gone up and measures have been taken by security forces to foil these bids at a time when violence has gone down in J&K
