| Akash’s sacrifice belittled,feels family, civil society | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 28: Conferring of Shaurya Chakra (posthumously) upon Major Akash Singh has not gone down well with his family members as well as some political outfits as they alleged that the union government has belittled the supreme sacrifice of the martyred army officer by decorating him with the lowest bravery award given in peace times.
Major Akash, of 5 Maratha Light Infantry sacrificed his life while fighting the militants, who intruded into Indian Territory, at Sona Gali in Mendhar sector of border district of Poonch on September 9 last. During the encounter Major Akash and his jawans succeeded in eliminating two dreaded Pakistani militants and seriously injuring another. It is pertinent to mention here that the Shaurya Chakra, for which Major Akash was chosen, is a gallantry award meant for military personnel for their valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice during the time of peace. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards as it comes after Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra.
Feeling perturbed with the decision of conferring only a ‘Shaurya Chakra’ for his son’s brave act, Shanker Singh, the father of Major Akash said that he deserved much more than what he received from the union government.
“My son was an intelligent student and for his sheer brilliance he received many accolades throughout his academic career,” said Shanker Singh adding that he could have easily got a good job in any field of work but he gave preference to join army for the sake of serving the nation.
“If the awards committee keep on deciding the awards for gallantry in this manner than others who wish to join armed forces would think twice to wear the olive green as such a decision concealed in itself a demoralizing factor to certain extent.” Shanker Singh further said estranged wife of Major Akash
Deepti Singh, widow of Major Akash said, “My husband made a supreme sacrifice for the nation and this is not what he deserves, he should have got more than that”
The bravery and courage of the valiant Major Akash could be gauged from the fact that he had written few lines under his photograph, “If death comes before I prove myself, I swear, I will kill death.”
This sentence itself speaks volume about the courageous nature of Major Akash, who was always eager to face any challenge even the bitter truth of death.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena Hindustan activists led by their president Dimpy Kohli today staged a protest demonstration against giving only a Shaurya Chakra to the brave army officer.
Shouting slogans against government, they demanded a highest gallantry award for the Major Akash.
Speaking on the occasion, Dimpy Kohli said that the Union government should review its decision of conferring Shaurya Chakra to the martyred Major.
